FOF #619 - The New Mr. Gay - 09.27.07

27/09/2007

When I first interviewed fashion model and businessman Shar Devon for our video podcast he had just won the Chicago Mr. Gay 2008 competition. Shar took the crown from our buddy and FOF fave Erik R. Sosa in what turned out to be a racially divided contest. The contest seemed as though half the crowd which was black was cheering for Shar and the other half which was white was cheering for the other contest. It was a tense situation. Luckily nothing erupted other than zealous cheering and gregarious stage drumming. It was wild to say the least and we are pleased that Shar won and was willing to come on today's show to talk about the event and about himself and his quest for the crown. Shar DeVon is a budding entrepreneur who is currently in the developmental stages of establishing 3 businesses - A fashion apparel line, an image consulting firm and a modeling agency exclusively for men. Shar states that his goals during his year of service are to generate public awareness regarding comprehensive healthcare needs of the LGBT community, promote tolerance, change perception, break stereotypes and dispel stigmas surrounding homophobia in our society. Listen as we chat with Shar about racial segregation inside and outside the gay community, how his favorite pet died, what it means to be a gay pageant winner and how he maintains his 27 inch waist. Yes, 27 inch waist. Yeow! You can visit Shar at his MySpace account. Video footage of the Mr. Gay competition is coming soon. Just one more day until the People's Choice Podcast Awards, and three more days until the live podcast in Los Angeles! Entertaining you by any means necessary- Feast of Fools. FOF #618 - Tazer with a “Z” - 09.26.07

26/09/2007

Yeow! The most electrifying appearance Senator John Kerry ever gave wasn't during his bid for U.S. President, it was last week at the University of Florida. The somewhat humorous, but nonetheless deeply disturbing videos of a college student getting tazered by campus police after getting a bit too gregarious at the public forum for Senator John Kerry has drawn a lot of scrutiny and criticism both against the local police and the former Democratic candidate. I thought I'd never say this, but seeing the inept way Kerry responded to the man screaming in pain in front of him makes me glad we have a dyed in the wool moron in the Whitehouse instead of a dummy in President's clothing. Either way, it sure doesn't boost any confidence in our Democracy now does it. Does anyone see the paralells to the young John Kerry and this man? Do you think the police were justified in their use of force? And what's the right way to spell Tazer? With a "Z" or an "S"? Join San Francisco comedian Ronn Vigh, Marc Felion and me, Fausto Fernoacute;s as we talk about Barry Manilow's music compelling use as torture people in prisons, special tea kettles in Japan that keep an eye out on your Gramps and brave hetero teenage boys fight back against homophobia. Electrifyingly entertaining- Feast of Fools. FOF #617 - From Russia with Love - 09.25.07

25/09/2007

Russian graduate student Nikolai Alexeyev got involved in the fight for gay rights in Russia when he wasn't allowed to graduate from his Masters program because his thesis involved gay subject material. This denial made Nikolai realize that he needed to advance social change in the Russia. He has certainly encountered a lot of resistance. The Mayor of Moscow thinks gays are an abomination and has vowed to ban gay pride parades in the Russian capital. Leaders of every major religious denomination in Moscow have successfully called for the ldquo;legalrdquo; banning of Gay Pride parades organized by Alexeyev and some of them have openly called for violence against Pride participants. Russian Orthodox priests went as far to bless neo-Nazi thugs before sending them off to attack gay clubs. Police have stood by while fascists have physically attacked Pride participants and then arrested the non-violent gay rights activists on trumped-up charges. Nikolai certainly has his hands full. That's a lot of hate and discrimination to fight against. In order to bring wider attention to the Russian situation, theGay Liberation Network is bringing Alexeyev to Chicago for his first-ever USA visit on Monday, October 3rd with a series of appearances ending with a keynote address at the 9th annual Matthew Shepard March for Gay Freedom on the evening of October 6, 2007 at 8PM on the corner of Roscoe and Halsted Street in Chicago, Illinois. Join us for today's show as our good buddy Andy Thayer comes over to introduce us to Nikolai and chat about the problems that GLBT people face in Russia. We chat with Nikolai about how GLBT people cope with the current cultural climate in Russia, why President Putin stripped down for a photo shoot while vacationing with the Prince of Monaco and what non Russians can expect from gay Russian men. FOF #616 - On the Stoop - 09.24.07

24/09/2007

Sal-E and I, Fausto Fernoacute;s, head out the house to record tonight's show. Something was in the air that made us just want to stroll outside. We are soon joined by my beloved husband, Marc Felion. Marc shows us which corner to hang out and record a show and turn a few tricks, if the possibility arises. We end up on the steps of a neighborhood church, which is not the best place for midnight cowboys like us, but it sure was comfortable. Were we divinely inspired on the steps of the church? Yes, if this is your version of the Divine. We talked about the obnoxious review on iTunes music store for the podcast. Usually we don't pay much attention to the negative ones, but this one really got our goat. And bitch, I want my goat back, she has medical needs and only understands Spanish. Anyway, this racist reviewer writes that they like our show but don't like that we speak, in their words, "the Wet language" and that the last time he checked, this is still the "US of A and not the US of M," which I guess must mean the US of Mexico. Marc was a little confused over this review because he wasn't familiar with the terminology of "wet language" and nothing turned up in a Google search. Having lived in the border state of Texas, I had heard it before. I know everyone's heard of wetbacks as a derogatory term for Mexicans, but now you know they have their own language- Wet. I guess its our language too at the Feast of Fools. I hope our show gets you soaking wet. Is the word podcast on the way out? It seems many feel that that the word podcast isn't the best word to describe what programs like the Gay Fun Show do. They feel that the word is too confusing for people because a lot of people still feel that they need to have an iPod to download and enjoy podcasts. Marc has some personal experience at the GLBT expo in March when he asked people if they listen to podcasts a very common response was "I don't have one." It just goes to show you that people do equate they term podcast with iPods. Other words have been purposed like "netcast," "microcast," "portable media" and now some people are suggesting the general term of "downloadable media" to cover podcasts, ATOM, and RSS media enclosures. They have even formed an Association for Downloadable Media to in their words "provide leadership in and organization of advertising and audience measurement standards, research, education and advocacy to all those involved in portable media." Work that hot new term. Listen as we chat about Sal-E friendships with porn stars, his new hair style and about our trip California.
