Gayle Ross is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation and a direct descendant of John Ross, Principal Chief of the Cherokee during the infamous “Trail of Tears”. Her grandmother told stories and it is from this rich Native American heritage that Gayle’s storytelling springs. During the past twenty-five years, Gayle has become one of the best-loved and most respected storytellers to emerge from the current surge of interest in this timeless art form.

Rance Hood Interview - Comanche Artist

Our featured guest on the premiere podcast of Native Narratives is Rance Hood, a mystical Comanche painter. Mr. Hood is one of the few Native American painters alive today deeply influenced by his traditional upbringing, and has a complete knowledge of their tribal culture and spirituality. Growing up in the home of his maternal grandparents, Rance was brought up speaking Comanche and was told traditional stories that eventually came to be the basis of his images. Starting to enjoy success in the 1960s, Rance Hood continues to paint his inspiring artwork today, depicting warriors on horseback riding through brilliantly colored landscapes and also his own spiritual visions. In this podcast, Rance gives us an inside look into his many different inspirations, ideology on color and storytelling, his painting origins, the significance of horses in the Comanche culture, and more.
